Description
Ned Garver (1925-2017) served in WW II, and was a right-handed pitcher in the majors for 14 seasons for the Browns (1948-1952), Tigers (1952-1956), KC A's (1957-1960), and expansion LA Angels (1961). Pitching for mostly bad teams, Garver appeared in 402 games, with a record of 129-157, 18 shut-outs, 12 saves, a 3.73 ERA, and hit .218, with 7 HRs, and 72 RBIs, used numerous times as a pinch-hitter, and also batted 6th a lot of times, when pitching. In 1949, he led the league in losses (12-17), in 1950, he was 13-18, with league leading 22 complete games, and finished 24th in MVP, and in 1951, was a career best 20-12, 24 complete games, with a shut-out, 3.73 ERA, made the All-Star team, and finished 2nd in MVP. Garver is the only pitcher to have won 20 games on a team that lost 100, as the Browns finished the 1951 season with a 52-100 record.
