Ralph "Major" Houk (1919-2010) served in the Army during WW II, and fought in the "Battle of the Bulge" under the command of General George Patton. Houk earned a Silver Star & Purple Heart, and was discharged with the rank of Major. He played parts of 8 seasons in the majors for the Yankees (1947-1954), as a right-handed hitting back-up catcher to "Yogi" Berra, only playing in 91 games, hitting .272, with 20 RBIs. Houk played in 41 of those games in his rookie season, hitting .272, with 12 RBIs, and appeared in 1 game each of the 1947 & 1949 W.S., with 1 hit in 2 at-bats, for a .500 batting average. He coached for the Yankees (1958-1960), and managed the Yankees (1961-1973-winning 3 pennants & 2 W.S., was Yankees G.M. (1964-1966), and Yankees manager again (1966-1973). He also managed the Tigers (1974-1978), and Red Sox (1981-1984), compiling a record in 20 seasons of 1619-1531.
