Description
Rick Wise (b.1945) is a former right-handed pitcher for 18 seasons in the majors for the Phillies (1964 & 1966-1971), Cardinals (1972-1973), Red Sox (1974-1977), Indians (1978-1979), and Padres (1980-1981 & 1 game in 1982). He appeared in 506 games, with a record of 188-181, 30 shut-outs, a 3.69 ERA, and hit .195, with 15 HRs, and 66 RBIs. Wise was a 2-time All-Star, and had 6 seasons of 15+ wins. In 1971, he was 17-14, including pitching a no-hitter against the Reds on 6-23-71, in which he also hit 2 HRs, becoming the 1st pitcher to hit a HR in his own no-hitter. He had his best season in 1975, helping the Red Sox win the pennant, with a career best 19-12 record, finishing 8th in Cy Young, and 25th in MVP. In the ALCS & W.S., he appeared in 3 games, with a 2-0 record. Wise was involved in 2 major trades during his career, the 1st on 2-25-72, when he was traded by the Phillies even up for future HOFer Steve Carlton, and on 3-30-78, when traded by the Red Sox to the Indians, along with Ted Cox, Bo Diaz, and Mike Paxton for Fred Kendall, and future HOFer Dennis Eckersley.
